Rather than spend a lot of time in a Blog whining about what is, and how horrible it is, I thought I would instead offer some constructive solutions to the various issues at hand. This is just the first volley in the series...
Problem: Illegal Immigration & the Border
The biggest problems with illegal immigration are A) lack of security on the Border that allows them entry, B) illegal drugs and the ultra-violent cartels that control their movement into the U.S., C) lack of ability to track their movements once in the country, D) inability to find and deport individuals who have overstayed their welcome (i.e. expired VISA, etc.) and E) the costs of public services for individuals that are largely not contributing to the coffers that pay for them.
Solution:
People can come into the U.S. one of three ways - as bona-fide immigrants intending to become citizens, as individuals wishing to work/study here but not live here indefinitely, or as tourists/workers. The *only* path to citizenship goes through the first two ways. Only access to non-catastrophic public services (i.e. anything beyond the Emergency Room) goes through the first two ways. All individuals coming into the U.S. would be issued a photocard with their picture and a tracking chip. They would be required to present that as their identification if requested by law enforcement. Failure to present it would be instant, irrevocable grounds for deportation.
Public services would only be available to legitimate immigrants and those coming in on a VISA. No one with a lifethreatening condition would be denied services at an Emergency Room. However, if the person came in as a tourist/worker, and was unable to pay his/her bill, that would be instant, irrevocable grounds for deportation. That person would also not be allowed to return to the U.S. under any circumstances until the bill in question was settled or paid.
Also, militarize the border with some of the troops we currently use to play police force with. We do not need a huge force in Japan, let them pay their own defense! We should move out of most of Europe and only maintain strategic bases like Rammstein AFB. Use these troops, along with new troops in basic training and National Guard units to guard *both* borders. Crossing the border anywhere except at approved crossings will be considered an illegal entry of an enemy espionage operative and will be met with deadly force.
Lastly, employers can hire whoever they want. Only individuals who entered via methods one or two are covered by U.S. Labor laws including minimum wage.
